Werner Glanz was born on February 17, 1960 in Horn/Lower Austria.

He was interested in equestrian sports from an early age. Numerous visits to the gallopers in Freudenau in Vienna awakened in him a great love for this sport.

After attending compulsory school, Werner Glanz decided to accept an apprenticeship as a jockey with trainer Emmerich Schweigert in Vienna Freudenau. During his three-year apprenticeship, Werner Glanz was able to achieve numerous victories as a flat and obstacle jockey.

From 1980 to 1986 he was an obstacle jockey in Munich under the trainers Charly Seiffert, Wolfgang Figge, Mario Hofer and Harald Ziese. At the latter, Werner Glanz was feed master from 1987 to 1990.
